A RECENT Community Speed Watch conducted on Jockey Hill, Crediton by local residents David Jaques and Frank Letch (Devon County Councillor) identified a number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
Bob Wright explained: “A speedwatch was carried out near the bottom of Jockey Hill on Friday, November 4, between 8am and 9am.
“During this time a total of 83 vehicles were recorded doing more than 35mph and 38 were doing more than 40mph, in a 30mph limit.
“Their details have been sent to the police.
“The highest recorded speed during the speedwatch was 45mph.
Community Speed Watch volunteers operate under Devon and Cornwall Police and aim to make communities safer by reducing vehicle speeds.
Volunteers assist the police in achieving this aim by monitoring vehicle speeds in locations where speeding is known to be a problem, logging details of vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
Using the information collated, a staged warning system is employed issuing advisory letters to the registered keepers of speeding vehicles.
Volunteers are trained in health and safety and on how to use the speed monitoring equipment. They are registered and only operate at police approved sites.
Every year about 28,000 people are killed or seriously injured on our roads and research has shown that speed is a major factor.
Driving even a small amount above the limit, or driving too fast in poor weather conditions increases the risk of causing a crash.
It also increases the likelihood of those involved sustaining serious or fatal injuries.
Community Speed Watch needs more volunteers in the Crediton area to assist Devon and Cornwall Police. For more information telephone Bob Wright on 01363 773566 or email: [email protected] .
