CHEQUES for £1,511.60 each were presented to two local charities this week.

The money was raised at two special events held at the Waie Inn, Zeal Monachorum to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the opening of the public house.

A charity lunch took place on Wednesday, July 8, and more than 150 people attended.

They enjoyed a splendid lunch and there were also stalls and a bumper draw.

The second event, a celebration evening took place on Saturday, July 11.

Following a supper there was entertainment by Denis Brinicombe and Friends, which had re-formed specially for the occasion.

Peter Heal, from Lapford, was the MC for the evening and also acted as auctioneer for the evening, which was attended by 130 people.

The two events raised more than £3,000.

Jean Burrow, from the Waie Inn presented the cheques, one each for Exeter Leukaemia Fund and the Children’s Hospice South West.

Jean thanked all those who supported the events, those who sponsored prizes, the musicians and Peter Heal.

Emma Perry, senior community fundraiser, Children’s Hospice South West and Nick Cordwent, chairman, Crediton branch, ELF, received the cheques.

Emma said that Children’s Hospice South West was celebrating its 25th anniversary, adding the money would be used to allow quality time for families whilst a child is nearing the end of life.

Nick said that ELF was looking to have a new building alongside the ELF centre where families could stay.
