LAPFORD Revel 2010 will be remembered for many reasons, not just exceptional Maypole dancing, a splendid royal party and crowning ceremony, but also scarecrows, fun and games and the sweet scramble.
A race night on the Monday at the Malt Scoop began the week-long event followed in the week by a rose and sweet pea show, bingo night and the crowning ceremony on the village green the Thursday.
A large crowd gathered before the royal procession made its way to the event while the church bells rang.
The Revel King was George Mellish and the Revel Queen was Jessica Burrows.
Crowners were Dylan May and Sasha Moyes.
Attendants were Daryl Heale, Daisy Morley, William Cowan-Dickie, Erin Bolt, Joel Penny, Laura Birtwistle Martin, Emily Yendell, Kai Needham, Lewis Harris, Maisie Williams, Savannah Down and Brady May.
Following the crowning ceremony there was a display of Maypole dancing by children from Lapford Primary School with their tutor, Ed Rennie from Crediton.
The dancing was exceptional and some splendid weaves were created on the Maypole.
Lottery funding of £500 awarded through Devon Community Foundation helped to pay for the tuition of the children prior to the event.
This was followed by a street dance performance and displays by Winkleigh Morris.
The evening also included the sweet scramble, barbecue, sweet stall and more.
On Friday there was the Revel tea, Fun and Games evening.
The scarecrow judging took place on the Saturday before the Fayre was opened. Mary Brown judged the scarecrow, Brunel, made by Ryan and Amie Smith as winner.
The Fayre was opened by Sue Briant-Evans with the Revel King and Queen.
The afternoon included children's entertainment and competitions for adults and music from local artists. There were many stalls.
A Victorian Songs of Praise was held in the Parish Church on the Sunday.
In all it was a very successful Revel and all were thankful that the event has now returned to the village calendar.
