FIREFIGHTERS have put out three vehicle fires in Mid Devon overnight, two of which were arson attacks.

Multiple calls were made to the fire service at around 2.28am this morning, Tuesday, May 13, reporting the first fire in Tiverton.

“Originally it was unknown what was on fire but two fire engines from Tiverton and one fire engine from Cullompton were mobilised,” a spokesperson said.

When they arrived, they found a vehicle “well alight”. They put out the blaze with one breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.

Then, the occupant of a home in Bradninch reported a second vehicle fire at 3.17am.

When Cullompton fire crews got to the scene, they saw the blaze had also spread to a hedgerow.

They used two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus to fight the fire, which destroyed the vehicle and the hedge.

This fire was “confirmed to be deliberate”, the fire service said. It has handed the incident over to the police.

Later, at 4.33am, police telephoned the fire service reporting a car smouldering, again at Bradninch.

A crew from Cullompton were mobilised again. When they arrived, they found there had been a small fire inside the car which was out by the time they got there.

They made the vehicle safe and made sure there were no more hotspots using a thermal imaging camera.

The car was 20 per cent damaged by fire and its interior ruined by smoke.

This fire was also deemed to have been deliberate, and the fire service has handed the incident over to the police.
