THE Government’s Autumn Statement of 2013 introduced a temporary business rate re-occupation relief, granting a 50 per cent discount from business rates for 18 months for new occupants of previously empty retail premises.

This came about to help reduce the number of boarded up shops on high streets in England.

The relief was granted to businesses moving into long-term empty retail properties on or after April 1, 2014 and on or before March 31, 2016.

From April 1 this year, 50 per cent re-occupation relief will no longer be available to business ratepayers.

If you claim before April 1, or are already in receipt of this relief, it will continue for a maximum of 18 months.
