SANDFORD schoolchildren joined members of Sandford Parish Council and villagers to plant trees to mark the 125th anniversary of the council.

The trees, donated by The Woodland Trust and of various varieties, were planted along the boundary of the playing fields in Sandford.

Gordon Griffin, a Parish Councillor, said: “It’s great to see young people involved in making our village greener.

"It’s lovely to see them so enthusiastic. They’re so well behaved.”

Some of the schoolchildren were really excited that the tree they planted will be tagged so they can find their tree in years to come.

Sandford Council chairman Jim Stephens and helpers prepared the land and dug the holes for each tree to make it easier for the children when they arrived.

The Mid Devon District Councillor for Sandford and Creedy, Cllr Elizabeth Wainwright (Green) was also among those helping at the tree planting.

Fiona Jeffery, Sandford School Headteacher, who helped with the tree planting, said: “We have been working so hard to make the school environment wildlife-friendly.

"We have a lovely pond and a variety of wild areas and it’s great for the young people to help do the same in the village.”
