AN illustrated presentation "From Plainsong to Post-Modernism – The Growth of Music" will take place on Monday, December 9, from 7.30pm at Crediton Library.
In a whirlwind tour of 1,000 years of musical development, illustrated by musical samples, musician and scholar Philip Lancaster will unravel the influences that have changed the sound of music over the centuries.
After attending the talk, those who attend will never confuse the sounds of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or atonal Serialism ever again.
Paul Vincent, from the Friends of Crediton Library explained: "In today’s world we can listen to music of any era, live or recorded, just for the pleasure of its sound.
"But what we hear today has developed not just through the efforts of individual composers and long-established folk traditions but because of historic cultural shifts, developments in musical expression, and the role of patronage – private, state, court or church. In the dialogue between harmony and dissonance, simplicity and complexity, music today with its influences from pop, jazz and world cultures may seem an eclectic confusion of ‘anything goes.’
"After this presentation there is a chance it will all make sense!"
Hosted by Friends of Crediton Library, this is the fourth and final event in FoCL’s autumn series on "The Senses." Admission is just £4. Under 18s free. Seasonal refreshments (for an extra donation) will be available when doors open at 7.15pm.
