FRIDAY night (April 24) saw Crediton A continue their perfect start to their campaign in near-perfect conditions, writes Joe Cookson.
With pleasant weather and very little wind, it made for an enjoyable evening of tennis.
An 8-0 victory over David Lloyd saw both of Crediton's pairs comfortably win their rubbers without ever really being put under any pressure.
The Crediton pairing of Joe Cookson and Callum Duggan were in dominant form, securing their rubbers 6-0 6-0 and 6-0 7-5.
Duggan in particular caught the eye, relishing the opportunity as his opponents repeatedly targeted his forehand, allowing him to dictate play, move his opponents around the court and take firm control of rallies, while Cookson was able to finish points off comfortably at the net.
Ed Poultney and Adam Haslewood were also untroubled, cruising to 6-1 6-2 and 6-2 6-1 victories. Poultney was his usual nuisance at the net, picking off volleys with sharp reflexes, while Haslewood’s smooth and consistent baseline play provided the perfect platform to keep their opponents firmly on the back foot.
Elsewhere, Crediton men’s B had a chance to pair father and son Richard and Ollie Wilk in their home match against a strong Exwick line-up, writes Guy Ainsley.
It was a great chance for Ollie to step up and test the opposition with his lovely attacking forehand.
For them to gain 7 games over 4 sets was really impressive given the mid-30s average age on the other side of the net.
Their endeavours were matched (also with 7 games and one losing championship tie-break) by Hugh Sims, who played with Guy Ainsley rather than his usual partner and nephew Arlo Vaughan.
A good all-round effort in a match that lasted three hours with barely any stoppage in play (no “sit-downs” between games like the professionals).
The matches come thick and fast, with the As in home action next against Woodbury, whilst the Bs head to Sidmouth.
