THE time was 7.30am on Sunday, October 9 - the weather was fine, albeit a little fresh, and the sun was rising with not a breath of wind (that was to change) - almost perfect conditions awaited those riding in this year’s event, this now the sixth time The Slammer has taken place.
In their droves they started to arrive at the picturesque setting of Creedy Park, the home of Sandford Cricket Club.
Cyclists of varying abilities, from young to not so young, male and female turned up on their road, hybrid or mountain bikes, tandems and e-bikes.
This year there was a slight amendment to the routes, this adding an extra mile to each rider’s efforts.
Given a choice of two suggested routes, off they set with huge smiles on their faces at 9am to take on the challenge.
Awaiting each participant at the halfway point was the food stop, this has over the years been described by many as the best experience, each cake and savoury – of almost every variety - baked or donated by many of the individuals who support The Slammer.
Profit is a word that doesn’t enter into the vocabulary of the Slammer with each penny raised going to the recipients.
This year’s event has raised a grand total of £2,514, this will be split between this year’s two recipients, MIND (who receive £1,334) and our fine hosts Sandford Cricket Club (who receive £1,180).
The organisers have once again been touched by the generosity of the individuals who gave personal donations of £154.
As well as familiar faces it was somewhat refreshing and warming to welcome new faces to this year’s event, the organisers thank them all. Riders from several local clubs including Willand CC, BGE, Exeter Wheelers CC, Okehampton CC, Tiv Velos, Bad Lodgers CC and of course the hosts, the Sandford Syclepaths also attended.
In addition, the organisers are extremely grateful to several local businesses and individuals who have given their support to The Slammer, they are (in no particular order) Torello Cycle Services, Sandford Orchards, Rory Oliver Photography, Chinn’s Sausages, Quicke’s of Newton St Cyres, The Sandford Gate Milk Company, Meadowside Garage, Tesco, Holly Water Holidays, Morrisons, Jacksons, The BikeShed and Withleigh Village Hall.
Finally, Chris and Lyn would like to thank each and every one of their volunteers and participants, no matter in what capacity you add to the success of The Slammer, the simple fact is this ride would not happen without your fantastic support.
