Organised by Chris O’Connor of the Sandford Syclepaths, in conjunction with Sandford Football Club, each of those taking part had a choice of three routes, 58, 33 or 16 miles with the vast majority electing for the 58 mile route.
An incredible amount of £1,310 was raised and the proceeds were split between the football club and The UK Sepsis Trust, two very worthy beneficiaries of what was unanimously voted a great day.
Chris has contracted Sepsis twice this year and for him this event marked a day when it’s time to stop looking back and concentrate on the future.
He explained: “The UK Trust has offered me tremendous support post sepsis and it relies solely on charitable donations. I can’t thank the local cycling community enough for turning up and supporting The Slammer.”
Some 102 riders, both male and female, registered for the ride with 86 taking part on the day. Participants from a number of local clubs took part including Exeter Wheelers CC, Willand CC, BG and E, Bad Lodgers CC and of course the hosts, the Sandford Syclepaths.
Chris added: “I’m amazed that we managed to attract double the number from last year and hope to repeat that again next year. The feedback we received was amazing, the routes and foodstop getting particular mention.”
Special thanks also go out to the football club wives and girlfriends for the fantastic cakes and hosting.
Plans now begin for the 2018 Sandford Slammer!
