SANDFORD First team completed their home fixtures with the visit of Kentisbeare First team at the King George V playing fields on Saturday, April 29.
The away side, lying second in the league, were always going to be strong opposition.
Having played out a 3-3 draw away, the home side were quietly confident. From the start Kentisbeare showed why they are second, repeatedly putting the home side under pressure.
Gradually Sandford came into the game, thanks partially to some brilliant saves from keeper Matt Parsell.
On 20 minutes Jack Perry shot over, winger Darren Hughes shot wide.
It was end-to-end play with both sides going close.
On 38 minutes captain Darren ran down the wing with a cross that found Sam Reeves, who shot over.
On 43 minutes Sam lobbed the keeper, only for it to go over the bar. The score was 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half a fierce shot from the Kentisbeare no 9 hit the bar. Keeper Matt was having a great game.
After 62 minutes the front runner Tudor Morgan-Huggett was subbed after taking a heavy knock. During the last two games he has really taken some stick, so all credit to him.
The home side were holding their own well until the 71st minute, when a break down the right wing and a cross found a Kentisbeare player who despatched the ball into the net. 0-1.
The home side, heads high, kept trying to find the equaliser even though they created several chances.
At the final whistle the score was 0-1 to the away side.
But the “ford” players can be really proud of the way they represented the club and the village.
Well done lads.
