Sidmouth RFC 76 - Crediton RFC 1st XV 17
WITH the very busy schedule Crediton RFC 1st XV have on the horizon and the injury-hit start to the season we’ve suffered, a very tough decision was made to rest a large number of the squad for the Devon Senior Cup Quarter Final, despite Sidmouth being a league above.
A lot of our lads won’t have faced opposition of Sidmouth’s stature, and with five young players making their first team debuts, they did themselves proud.
It was always going to be a stern test, and Sidmouth showed their class early on, dictating the tempo with a fast-paced, expansive brand of rugby that caught us on the back foot.
Their sharpness around the breakdown, quick ball movement, and ability to stretch the pitch meant we spent long spells defending in the first half.
Despite our best efforts, the damage was largely done in those opening 40 minutes as Sidmouth capitalised on their dominance to open up a commanding lead. The half time score line was at 66-5.
However, our pack refused to take a backward step. From the first whistle to the last, our scrum consistently went forward, applying pressure at set-piece and giving us a platform to work from.
The line out drive was equally effective. This physical edge kept us in the contest and showcased the grit and determination within the squad.
The match was a bruising affair throughout, but our lads fronted up to the challenge. There was no shying away from contact, and the physicality on display from our side was outstanding, particularly from a group containing so many young and inexperienced players.
The second half saw a noticeable shift in momentum. We regrouped well and took the game to Sidmouth, playing with greater control and confidence.
Our efforts were rewarded as we won the second half 12–10, scoring two well constructed tries and tightening up our defence considerably. It was a spirited fightback that demonstrated real character and potential.
Although the final scoreline heavily favoured Sidmouth, the performance in the second half gave plenty of reasons to be positive.
Our set piece, the physical commitment shown across the park, and the emergence of young talent all point towards a bright future.
A tough outing, but one that will no doubt serve as a valuable experience for the squad moving forward.
