PENRYN 58-14 CREDITON RFC WOMEN XV
CREDITON Women made the long trip to Penryn on the fun bus but endured a difficult afternoon against a confident home side, who capitalised on territory, possession and quick ball to secure a deserved victory.
From the opening exchanges, Penryn applied relentless pressure and were rewarded with the first score of the match, crossing for a converted try to take a 7-0 lead. Crediton struggled to establish any territorial advantage, with lineouts and scrums failing to provide the platform needed to launch meaningful attacks.
Penryn's second try came from quick ball at the base of a scrum. Spotting space in the defensive line, the home side broke through and raced under the posts for another converted score to extend their advantage to 14-0.
The hosts continued to move the ball effectively across the pitch, combining slick handling with intelligent kicking to keep Crediton pinned back in their own half. Forced into a reactive role, Crediton's defence was repeatedly stretched as Penryn consistently broke the gain line. A further penalty led to another attacking opportunity, with the home side crossing again to move 19-0 ahead.
Crediton then produced an excellent defensive stand to deny another score, holding up a Penryn attacker over the line. Rachel Mortimer followed up with an excellent goal-line drop-out clearance to relieve the pressure, but Penryn soon regained momentum and added another try to increase their lead to 26-0.
The visitors finally produced their first sustained attacking spell of the match. Although an early opportunity ended with the ball being spilled in contact, Crediton continued to show greater attacking intent. After winning a penalty, Rachel found touch well, but the resulting lineout drifted too long and possession was lost once more.
The breakthrough eventually came when Crediton moved the ball quickly through the hands. The attack was worked wide before the ball was brought back inside for Mortimer, who ran a superb line to cross for the visitors' first try. She added the conversion herself to reduce the deficit to 26-7.
Crediton finished the half strongly. Following a Penryn lineout adjudged not straight, the visitors were awarded a scrum beneath the posts. The pack provided a solid platform, and the pressure told when Holly Keast powered over for a well-earned try. Rachel added the extras to cut the gap to 26-14 at the interval.
Any hopes of building on that momentum after the break were quickly dashed as Penryn struck immediately from the restart to score again and extend their lead.
Crediton introduced fresh legs throughout the second half, with Lauren replacing Katie Salter and Caitlyn coming on for Grace. Later, Roxie and Heidi were also introduced as Crediton utilised the full squad. Despite the changes, Penryn continued to dictate proceedings. Their willingness to move the ball at pace regularly created overlaps and kept the visitors on the defensive.
A number of set-piece issues continued to hamper Crediton's progress, while Penryn's ability to maintain territory and possession ensured they remained in control during the closing stages. The home side continued to convert pressure into points and eventually ran out 58-14 winners.
Despite the scoreline, Crediton never stopped competing and produced individual flashes of quality throughout the match. Penryn, however, were ruthless when opportunities arose, with their sharp finishing and intelligent use of space securing a deserved victory.
There was, however, a significant milestone for Crediton to celebrate. The match marked Rachel Mortimer's 100th appearance for the club, a tremendous achievement and a testament to her commitment and contribution over many seasons.
The journey home also ended on a high note for the Elders, who claimed bragging rights after victory in Emma's now-traditional fun bus quiz.
