CREDITON RFC WOMEN 21-15 WESTERN HORNETS

CREDITON Women produced a determined performance on Sunday to claim a hard-fought win over Western Hornets, securing their second victory over the visitors this season.

With the rain holding off but the pitch still heavy, Crediton hosted the Hornets for the home leg of their two scheduled encounters this season.

Despite having played only once since November—a win over Winscombe the previous weekend—and still managing a couple of injuries, the home side rose to the occasion.

Both teams delivered an intense, end-to-end contest that kept supporters fully engaged throughout.

The Hornets struck first with an early try, though the conversion was missed. Crediton responded with composure, as Holly Burrows powered over the line and Rachel Mortimer added the extras to give the hosts a 7–5 lead at the break.

Crediton extended their advantage shortly after the restart when Kaitlyn Fox crossed for their second try, again converted by Rachel Mortimer, pushing the score to 14–5.

The Hornets, however, refused to fade and hit back with an unconverted try, enjoying long spells of possession as they pressed for more.

Crediton’s defensive effort was immense, with the forwards dominating the scrums. Holly Burrows dominated the line-out, stealing crucial ball and carrying strongly in open play, while Sophie Robinson delivered a tireless defensive shift in the first half.

A succession of infringements—including high tackles—saw Crediton reduced to 14 players for 10 minutes.

The Hornets capitalised on the numerical advantage, scoring twice out wide to edge ahead 15–14, though both conversions were missed. With 10 minutes remaining, the match hung in the balance.

The narrow deficit sparked a fierce response from the home side. Roared on by a vocal crowd, Crediton surged forward in the closing stages.

Their pressure paid off when Emma Davie crashed over near the posts, with Rachel’s third successful conversion sealing a dramatic 21–15 victory.

It was a superb result for Crediton and an excellent showcase of women’s rugby—two evenly matched teams delivering a gripping, physical, and highly competitive encounter.
