PENZANCE & NEWLYN 48-26 CREDITON RFC 1ST XV
THE buildup to this week’s trip to Penzance told the story of our season in miniature - a campaign defined by resilience in the face of adversity.
With injuries and unavailabilities once again forcing major reshuffles, the squad faced one of the toughest away fixtures on the calendar determined to dig deep and keep our push for fifth place on track.
That determination was epitomised before a ball was kicked. Number eight Ben Wonnacott lined up in the centre, showing his versatility once again.
Freddie Borthen made only his second outing of the season, having last featured back in early September before a long injury layoff.
And Joe Dodge returned to the 1st XV fold for only his second ever appearance for the first time since 2021.
The opening exchanges were evenly matched, both sides contesting fiercely for territory and possession.
Our defensive line, which has been such a strong feature over recent weeks, stood firm under intense early pressure.
But after repeated phases on our line, Penzance finally found a way through, then built momentum to stretch their lead to 17-0.
Far from folding, we rallied superbly before the break. With some determined carries and sharper execution, we hit back with two well-worked tries to cut the deficit to 17-12 at halftime, a reflection of our fight and belief after a difficult opening spell.
After the restart, however, defensive lapses began to creep in.
Where our structure had been strong, we slipped off a few too many tackles, and Penzance capitalised clinically to reassert control and pull away on the scoreboard.
Still, our character never wavered. Even in a game where we created little in attack, we managed to cross for two more second-half tries, testament to the side’s spirit and pride in the shirt.
The final scoreline of 48-26 flattered the hosts and did not tell the full story of the contest.
We leave Penzance with a solitary point but plenty of credit for our effort and resolve.
With a decent position still held in the table and players gradually returning to fitness, attention now turns to next week’s home fixture against Cullompton.
