The most exciting day of the year at Downes Crediton was played on Saturday, June 23 - the second round of the club championships. After the first round there were up to 20 players in contention for the handicap and in the Scratch there were up to 10 competitors all fighting for the trophy.
With the final group of Ollie Greenslade, Rodin Mackay and last year’s winner, Mike Delling, it was set up to be a cracking final day with them all tied at the top.
After the front nine it was looking like it was going to go down to the wire as in the handicap there were four people all within three shots of the leader, Neil Ford, but it was Jamie Parsons who stole the show with a tremendous second round score of 62 (eight under) to win this year’s Buller Bowl handicap club championship with a total score of 134 (six under).
Ashley Cross made a late charge as well to finish second with a total score of 136 (four under) while Simon March finished third with a total score of 138 (two under).
The scratch was also looking like it was going to be a close one with Mike Delling putting a solid front nine defence to be level with a charging Martin Garnsey who got the one shot back after the front nine to be level with Mike.
Rodin Mackay went through nine one shot back while Ollie Greenslade was two shots back heading into the back nine but golf can be full of surprises as Ollie went from two shots back from Mike to one up on him and level with Rodin heading to the 12th hole. He then birdied the 12th, then birdied the 13th to give himself the lead of the final group to make a fantastic eagle on the 14th hole to give himself a little bit of breathing space from his playing partners going into the final holes.
Martin Garnsey had come in with a superb final round score of 74 gross to be clubhouse leader with the final group on the 18th tee but it was Ollie Greenslade who took this year’s championships finishing with a bogey on the last to shoot a fantastic final round of 73 to take the total score for the competition of 150 (10 over gross) while Martin Garnsey finished second with a score of 152 (12 over).
Rodin Mackay finished third with a score of 155 (15 over) while Mike Delling finished fourth putting in a extremely solid defence of his title with a score of 155 (15 over) beaten by a better back nine.
