SITUATED between Fordton and Hookway on the south side of the A377, Downes Crediton Golf Course occupies about 100 acres of beautiful Devon countryside.

Edged by the railway, the River Yeo runs through a part of the course. The fairways and greens meander through this rural landscape, and if the golf isn’t going too well, players can always enjoy the views and wildlife!

The task of keeping the course in excellent condition at Downes falls to the club’s three greenkeepers.

They are Guy Hoskins, Rob Tancock and Shaun Stapleton, and working with them the Director of Greens, Kenneth Bones.

There are willing helpers on hand when needed, and in particular, the multi skilled services of David Taylor and Gerry Hodder.

The range of work needed to keep golf courses in tip top condition is extensive.

Cutting fairways is a full time activity, as is the preparation and maintenance of the greens and their surrounds. This is a key task occupying many hours with all the different treatments etc needed to keep the players happy.

With our rich Devon soil, keeping on top of the drainage is also very important. These are just a few of the tasks essential for the maintenance of the course.

All this work is subject to the vagaries of the English weather, which can be kind, or downright difficult. But rain or shine the work has to be done, and the members really appreciate the effort put in by those mentioned in this article.

Just one result this week. The first East Devon League match of the season took place at Axe Cliff.

The Downes team came out on top with a 3.5 to 1.5 win against defending champions Exeter Golf and Country Club. Well done team.
