WITH so many competitions taking place over the last month or so, your Courier correspondent must apologise to the Seniors section for missing out one of their most eagerly anticipated matches of the year.

It is indeed one of the fun events of the Seniors calendar, and the joshing begins several weeks before the actual event takes place.

This is usually provoked by the signup sheet in the changing rooms, and the many comments about who is entitled to belong to each team. All good natured fun.

The event was, of course, the Devonians v Rest of the World match.

This teed off on Monday, July 20, once again serving up a brilliant day of golf, good-natured rivalry, and just enough edge to keep things interesting!

Played in a 4BBB match play format, the event had all the ingredients for a proper club occasion.

For those who fancied extending the day a little longer, there was a well-earned meal served up afterwards.

The team captains were Rob Abrahams for the Devonians and Richard Lloyd for the Rest of the World.

Last year’s competition was memorable for the fact that the winning team was the Rest of the World side, a result they hadn’t managed to achieve for 12 years.

But on this occasion normal service was resumed, and it was the Devonians who held their nerve, winning by 11½ to 5 ½.

Commiserations to the Rest of the World, who will no doubt already be plotting revenge in 2027.

Saturday, July 26 saw another huge field in the President’s Prize competition.

This was won by Phil Cope with a really excellent score of 46 points.

The August 1 competition saw well over 90 players competing in the 21st Century Flag event. More on this unusual competition next week.
