AUGUST was a very busy month for Downes Junior golfers. There have been lots of Open competitions and many of our juniors have visited other clubs and achieved some excellent results.

The highlights being Liam Whittleston winning at Torquay and Alfie Swain winning at Sidmouth scoring 39 and 42 respectively.

In the East Devon Junior League competition the juniors from seven clubs played against each other in teams of six.

Downes finished third, an excellent first year for these juniors team.

Downes also entered a team into Exeter GCC pro-am. The team consisted of Liam Whittleston, Ed Shorey and George Saunders, along with Ollie our golf professional at Downes.

This was the first event of this kind that the juniors had played in. They were a little nervous but it didn’t show.

On the first tee they all hit remarkable shots, shaping the ball around the corner to give them a shot into the green.

This performance continued throughout the day and culminated in a score where they finish fifth.

A great performance and well done them.

Friday night is club night at Downes, when the juniors will come along at 4pm do some skills challenges, some tricks with the golf ball, and then go out on the course and play nine holes.

It is a fun night so if you’re under the age of 18 and a member of Downes Crediton and want some fun please come along and join in.

The Saturday. September 29 competition was the Ray Shire Trophy. It was played in some rather unusual conditions for this summer - rain!

Despite the wet weather, scoring was exceptional. Scott Harris, Paul D’Inverno and Peter Duncan took top spot with an incredible nett 52.

Jamie Parsons, Dean Pidgeon and Nigel Harris were second place with a nett 55.
