GOLF is a game all ages. We have mentioned before in our articles, there are nonagenarians and octogenarians playing regularly, and at the other end of the scale on a Sunday afternoon you will find a group of our youngest players practising their skills under the guidance of Ollie, one of our professionals.

It’s a joy to see them practising chipping, putting and hitting the ball down the fairway. It’s an introductory taster to the game, a chance to try out the skills involved. Several of those that have continued on from these early beginnings are now some of our best youth players.

Downes Golf Club also has good links with Exeter University. There are quite a number of students who play regularly at Downes.

Indeed we seem to be quite a popular golf course among the student body. It is a pleasure to see them on our course and to watch them play.

Many of them hit the ball incredible distances, though not necessarily in the right direction always! In addition to their casual golf, various groups from the university arrange competitions on the course.

This month Exeter Uni Politics Society have had a competition, and last week there was a Jack Parry Exeter Uni ‘Ryder Cup’ match. Many of the students have reported back how much they enjoy playing at Downes.

Members events at the club this last week have included the seniors May medal, which was one by David Taylor with a net score of 69, and the ladies May medal was won by Sue Jackson with a net 78.

On Saturday, May 23 there was once again a large field of almost 100 players competing in the 40th Anniversary Jug competition. Three players scored 38 points. John Huskinson won with a better back nine.
