IT was Andrew Chandler who claimed this year’s Alan Ruddock Trophy, played on Monday, July 15 at Downes Crediton Golf Club, with a fantastic score of 40 points to win the trophy and Division Two.
Richard Wilson finished second in Division Two with a score of 39 points. In Division One it was Hugh Fernyhough who took top spot with a great score of 38 points with Pete Russell finishing second with 38 points losing to a better back nine.
Graham Jones took the mid-week stableford played on Wednesday, July 17 with a great score of 41 points.
The pair of Diane Botterill and Anne Woodger stole the show in this year’s “Express and Echo” foursomes, played on Thursday, July 18, with a fantastic score of 38 points to beat the pair of June Mitchell and Lyn Parry who finished second with a score of 37.
Friday, July 19 saw Downes Professionals Devon Greenslade and Barry Austin play 100 holes of golf around the Crediton course to raise money for the Captain’s Charity, Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
Starting off at 5.45am the Pros started on their five rounds and 10 holes marathon with the support of different members caddying nine holes at a time.
Along the way there was some good golf played from them both with the highlight being a second round nine under par 61 from Austin.
Whilst the Pros were covering their final 18 holes the members enjoyed a nine hole Texas Scramble won by Rodin Mackay, Kev Cole and Paul Luxton that finished in time for them and other members to cheer Greenslade and Austin as they make their way up their 100th and final hole at 9.15pm some 15-and-a-half hours after they started.
The night was finished off nicely with a barbecue and beer and gin festival with the final sum raised being more than £1,000. Thank you to everyone who supported and donated and made the day so special.
Saturday, July 20 saw this year’s Captain’s charity and centenary stableford and with conditions playing right into the players hands there was sure to be some amazing scores and there was with Gerald Abdoll shooting an unbelievable 46 points to win the overall prize and Division Two.
Simon March finished second with a score of 38 points.
In Division One it was Matt Dyne continuing his good season with 39 points while Andy Frankum finished second with 39 losing to a better back nine.
In Division Three it was Andrew Rogers who came out on top with a superb 42 points beating Steve Blackmore who scored 38 points.
