DOWNES Crediton Golf Club Seniors pulled off a magical first for the club in their 46 year history as they won the Devon County Seniors Inter Club Knockout of the Emerton Court trophy, for the first time.
Playing the final at Tiverton Golf Club they overcame a strong Portmore Golf Club 3-2 to lift the coveted trophy.
In an extremely tense and exciting encounter the early exchanges were “nip and tuck” with no team taking the upper hand but as the game wore on both sides prevailed in two matches.
This left Downes team Captain Martin Howe and partner David Cousins to get the winning point.
Playing the 17th, with the watching crowd ever increasing, David Cousins played three immaculate shots to find the heart of the green and although his first putt left a “nerve jangling” seven footer he was up to the challenge to claim the final and all important winning point.

On Monday, October 3 Nigel Ashplant was in superb form as he amassed an impressive 45 points to win the Mick Thompson Trophy whilst also topping Division Two, seven points clear of second placed David Lee (38pts).
In Division One Jim Matheson scored 39 points for the victory with David Taylor posting 36 points to place second.
Patrick McVeigh scored 31 points for victory in the week’s Midweek Stableford on Wednesday, October 5.
Downes Crediton was bathed in pink on Thursday, October 6 as the ladies played their annual Breast Cancer County Stableford.
Anne Woodger, Lyn Parry and Ladies Captain Shirley Stunell all scored 32 points but it was Anne who took the victory by virtue of a better back nine holes.
The ladies nine-hole stableford winner was Rickie Pawsey who scored 12 points.
Michael Trick scored 19 points to win the week’s Thursday nine-Hole Stableford.
Saturday, October 8, saw members battle it out for the final trophy of the golfing season, The Champion’s Trophy, a competition for players who had won a major competition throughout the season.
The honour of taking this crown went to Neil Bishop who put together a “Champions round” as he scored an stunning 64 nett (six under).
Following in second was Stephen Yates (nett 66) with Steve Blackmore (nett 67) in third.
For the other seasons competition winners there was a Competition Winners Stableford that saw Andrew Priddle score 36 points to claim the victory. Stewart Cowling posted 34 points for second place.
