GOLF is a competitive sport, and to reflect this there are many competitive events arranged at Golf Clubs up and down the land.
It is also a very social sport, mixing with others, meeting new people, making new friends.
Last week’s article mentioned the Downes Crediton Golf Club June Inter Club mixed competition that took place on Sunday, June 29.
It is always a pleasure to receive feedback on an event or activity, so on this occasion we thought we would share and quote directly the feedback from this mixed event, written and sent to us by Sue Pearman.
“A great day at Downes Crediton yesterday. It was a busy day for everyone there but we were looked after so very well. It’s always so good when whatever pressure is going on for the hosts/staff, it never shows and guests feel welcome. That’s how it was yesterday.
“There was a Dartmoor League match going out early in the morning - great atmosphere before and afterwards, and then our Mixed Greensomes followed.
“Lots of different sorts of food and refreshments all day - all done so smoothly and cheerfully.
“Ollie (freshly qualified as a Golf Professional) had been so helpful in advance of our event and had the cards already printed out for us. So good to see so many happy people!
“Lovely to catch up with old friends and also meet lots of players new to Dartmoor league and - indeed - Crediton.
“Loads of complements about the course which was nice to hear. The event was Greensomes Stableford - two best scores from the three pairs from each club.
“A hole in one always brings a big cheer to an event like this - well done Bev Benson from Elfordleigh who holed out on the 3rd.
“There were 10 two’s who each received half a dozen balls. Winners of the event (trophy will be presented at the Awards Evening) were Dainton Park with 81 points.
“Thanks to all the clubs supporting this event and to the players - who make the day!
“One of those special days that you remember for sometime”.
The club is very grateful for these kind words.

It was another very busy week of competitions, on Monday, June 30 it was Seniors’ Jack Painting trophy, won by Quintin Payne-Cook with the score of 41 points.
In second place was Andy Gibson and third Alwyn Evans, both with 38 points. There was also a nine hole competition, but your reporter is too modest to say who won!
The Ladies section held their usual competitions on Tuesday and Thursday. The Thursday stableford was won by Lyn Parry, with Linda Gill and Sue Jackson in second and third places.
On Monday there was a Ladies Devon League match against Ilfracombe, won by the Downes Ladies. There was also a Presidents home match on Friday, July 4 against Woodbury GC Ladies. Most matches went to the 18th hole and the final result was in favour of the Crediton Ladies by 4½ to 2½.
Saturday was another very busy day with nearly 80 competitors in the All Day Invitational Pairs betterball event. The result was very close with five pairs coming within a point of each other. The winners by just one point, were Natasha Slee of Downes GC and partnered by Scott Green.
