DOWNES Crediton Golf Club got back into the swing of things after the festive period with a full complement of club competitions during the course of last week.
Monday, January 2 saw the seniors play a three clubs and a putter competition and winning with a score of 32 points was Jim Dunlop.
Jim’s score was equalled by Edward Copp (32 pts) but he took the victory courtesy of a superior back nine holes.
Dunlop and Copp also took first and second spot in Division One with Arthur Moughton following in third scoring 31 points.
Graham Jones posted 31 points to take top spot in Division Two beating John Dean (31 pts) with a better back nine whilst Roger Gratton scored 30 points to take third place.
Downes ladies also played a three clubs and a putter on Thursday, January 5 with Fran Shrubsole and Joyce Gilg both posting scores of 33 points to take first and second place respectively.
Lady Captain Liz Mapson followed in third, scoring 30 points, whilst Betty Willey finished fourth with her 29 point total.
With the course in superb condition Downes men competed in a Canadian Foursomes pairs competition on Saturday, January 7.
This event, which sees both partners play their first two shots, choose the best positioned ball and then alternate shots until the ball is holed, always sees good scoring and this time proved no exception.
At the top of the field four pairs produced fine scores of 10 under par (46 points) and had to be separated by their back nine totals.
There was family edge to the top two spots with the duo of Barrie Phillips and Joe Hull winning whilst Joe’s son Adam Hull and partner Chris Bruce had to settle for second.
Andy Frankum and Dave Sims came in third whilst the last of the 46 point pairs, Matt Redstone and Richard Dyer were placed fourth.
Neil Bishop and Gerry Tomlinson, the only pair to post 45 points, finished fifth.
