MORLEY RANGERS 2 - SPREYTON 5

SATURDAY, February 9 saw a clinical win for Spreyton FC play in the quarter-final of the Devon Intermediate Cup.

A very tough away game saw them claim the victory over Morley Rangers to progress to the semi-finals.

The game started off with both teams attacking aggressively, it was clearly one of the toughest tests the lads have faced this season.

Owen Gregory broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the game, some scrappy play in the box saw the youngster get a shot off which found the back of the net - 1-0.

Five minutes later it was Owen at it again smashing a peach of a shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

With 24 minutes gone Morley, puting the pressure on the Sprey’s, gave away a penalty. A strike that hit the inside of the post to cross the line and saw the home team pull one back - 2-1.

Morley, attacking again, saw Spreyton ’keeper Chris Gunn-Hawks pull off a fine save tipping the ball onto the crossbar and out.

The opposition were piling on the pressure and with 37 minutes gone one of the Morley strikers turned the defence inside out to cooly slot one home - 2-2.

Half-time and the gaffer pulled the boys in for a bit of encouragement and instilled some self-belief into his side.

The second half had barely started before captain Will Hawking was on the receiving end of a nasty tackle in his own box resulting in the Morley striker receiving a straight red!

The Sprey’s started to take advantage putting the pressure back on the opposition. Steve Kinsey was denied a goal with a great save from the Morley ‘keeper.

Chris Down saw a thundering shot hit the woodwork and Cam Pow was denied a goal hitting the post a few minutes later.

At 75 minutes in and who else but Chris Down put the Sprey’s back in front with a superb chip over the ‘keeper finding the top bin - 3-2.

The Sprey’s were really going for it taking advantage of the extra man.

At 82 minutes in Liam Ward, although suffering from cramp, hit an unstoppable half-volley into the back of the net making it 4-2.

Going into the final minutes of the game Chris Gunn-Hawks released a hell of a kick finding young Owen who proceeded to complete his hat-trick - 5-2.

A very tough challenge but the lads got the job done ending in a comfortable scoreline.

Now it’s onto the semis. Man of the match was Owen Gregory with a hat-trick and a great all-round performance.

The boys were ecstatic to seal the win and get a step closer to more silverware.
