SANDFORD 6-0 BROADHEMPSTON
LAST Saturday, October 11, saw the Devon Intermediate Cup first round come to the George V playing field when Sandford FC’s first team played host to Broadhempston from South Devon.
On a bright, sunny afternoon, the away side kicked off.
Sandford were forced to make changes from the side that won the previous week; ’ford, playing away from the pavilion end, soon went on the attack and after several chances forced an own goal by a defender. 1-0 .
The home side’s skill and speed was causing the visitors real problems, and after 26 minutes a cross ball by left-winger James Durand found Matt Baker, who volleyed the second goal. 2-0 .
More chances went begging for Sandford to increase their lead, but none were taken.
Then, on 37 minutes, a Broadhempston attack saw a shot go past the outside of the post, with keeper Hawkins beaten.
Half-time arrived with the score at 2 -0 to the ‘ford.
The second half started with Sandford playing towards the tennis courts, and on 48 minutes Shaun Stapleton shot over from a corner.
Again, more chances were missed, and soon substitutes were made. On came Tyler Morgan Hugget in defence, Jayden Freind and Zac Fee in attack.
On 64 minutes, Jayden was rewarded for all his hard running and physicality when he netted number three for the ‘ford.
By now, Sandford’s score should have been in double figures with the chances missed.
Then, on the 73 minute, Broadhempston had a shot saved at the other end. The next minute there was a corner to Sandford and the ball, falling to Roger Hill, who back-heeled it past the keeper for goal number four. 4-0.
Two more goals were scored by Zac Fee in the last 10 minutes to give Sandford another dominant win, 6-0.
A great performance from all the team.
Next week, Sandford are at home to University eighth, kickoff 3pm. Well done the ‘ford.
A date for your diaries: The football club grand draw and meat bingo is on Friday, December 12 at Sandford Village Hall. Eyes down at 7.30pm.
