SATURDAY, May 9 saw Sandford play their final match of season at home against Westexe Park Rangers.

After finishing second in the league and gaining promotion the home side still needed to get a good result against a team who had beaten them a few games previously.

The away side again fielding three of their first team players as they did in first game.

Westexe kicked off and "ford" immediately won the ball. A cross from James Durand found Jayden John Mark who fired over the bar.

On 12 minutes the away side also shot over the bar.

Sandford won a free kick outside the box from which Sam Reeves found Shaun Stapleton who headed over.

On 20 minutes Sandford fell behind when Westexe scored, 0-1.

Another chance for Sandford when frontrunner Jayden was put through on goal only to loose control of the ball.

The game flowed from end to end with Sandford keeper Headley making two or three crucial saves before halftime arrived with Sandford trailing 0-1.

Substitutions were made for the second half with Ryan Trump moving from midfield to left fullback and Rowan Bosacki coming into midfield.

On 52 minutes "ford" again won a free kick which came to nothing.

On 62 minutes Matt Baker playing his final game in a green shirt cut inside and shot over the bar. Then seven minutes later Sandford drew level when sub Bosacki headed in, 1-1.

The Sandford defence came under pressure with the Westexe keeper launching long kicks aided by a stiff breeze and on 72 minutes the away side took the lead, 1-2.

Sandford pressed forward looking for the equaliser but shots either missed the target or were saved.

Was this going to be defeat in their final match, no, deep in injury time with the keeper advancing, one of Sandford’s rising stars Luke Cassar, with two defenders, managed somehow to lift the ball over and into an open net, 2-2.

A brilliant end to a great season, runners up in the league and quarter finalist in the Devon intermediate cup.

Well done to all the players and a big thankyou to all our loyal supporters. See you all again next season.
