STREET 3 - CREDITON UNITED 0
A GOAL at each end of the first half by home skipper Kameron Andrews went a long way to helping Toolstation Western League Premier Division Street to victory over SW Peninsula League Crediton United at a sunny Tannery on Saturday, August 31 and giving the young Cobblers a second visit of the season to Shepton Mallet in the next round.
Having lost the opening day league thriller 3-2 at West Shepton, Des Bulpin’s squad, packed full of teenagers, will fancy their chances after easing past the Devon side who came up country and played some nice football of their own despite being behind for virtually the whole game.
Bulpin was full of praise for his squad and despite taking pains not to single out individuals could not help but mention Andrews saying: “Kam was outstanding, not only with his play but as a captain. I am very happy with the squad I have and we are attracting the attention of some senior men who want some of what we have here.”
Crediton would have hoped to be able to compete on even terms but within 30 seconds they were behind as Andrews was given far too much room to wander through the defence and plant a left foot shot past Lewis Slade.
Crediton responded in kind with Simon Durrant going close with a header then Jamie Harkness blazed over from 15 yards before long-serving front man Kenny Ord’s left foot effort went the same way.
Despite the goal, Street were struggling to get any cohesion and Crediton were right in the game with Stephen Goss and Ord again testing the defence as the game entered a scrappy phase. Just as the away side were getting a toe hold Andrews timed his run to ease past a square defence and walked around Slade to make it 2-0 just on the half-time whistle.
After the break Crediton continued to press and as the game opened up a Bradley Riggs free-kick was saved by home ‘keeper Liam Norris and after Dan McCann had wasted a good chance to half the deficit Brad Shephard’s volley from distance went wide.
Andrews was inches away from a hat-trick with 20 minutes left before Ord almost took advantage of a long clearance only for his effort to be hacked off the line at the other end.
Substitute Olly Hebbard eventually put the game to bed late on when the away defence went awol and he was given the room he needed to tuck a shot under Slade to make it 3-0 and confirm the trip up the road to West Shepton Playing Fields on September 14.
Crediton boss Matt Trenaman, a local man and former United player, has a squad capable of enjoying a good season and they will build on their start of two wins from five league games in Premier East.
