FOOTBALLERS from across Exeter’s diverse range of communities will come together this month for an annual five-a-side tournament in support of ‘Kick Racism Out of Football’.

The 22nd yearly iteration of the tournament will kick off on Sunday, June 14 from 10am to 3pm, and those interested still have time to enter a team.

Organised by Exeter International Football Club in partnership with Exeter City Community Trust, the World Cup-style event celebrates inclusion, diversity and unity through football.

The competition encourages participation from local Black and minority ethnic teams and attracts players from many different backgrounds.

Previous winners have included teams representing Poland, Slovakia, Afghanistan and Lithuania, highlighting the diversity within the city.

The tournament was established more than 20 years ago by Exeter International United FC and Exeter City Community Trust and continues to receive support from the University of Exeter, which is hosting this year’s event. Exeter City Supporters’ Trust is also proudly supporting the tournament.

The action will take place on the 3g pitch at Exeter University’s Streatham Campus, with a knockout-style format, and the last team standing being crowned the winners.

The organisers are backing the national Kick It Out campaign, whose mission it is to make sure football is a game for everyone.

Set up in 1993 to fight racism in football, Kick It Out expanded in 1997 to fight all forms of discrimination, and now runs education programmes for academy players, parents and fans as well as supporting under-represented communities to make a career in football.
