A TOTAL of 127 golfers teed up for the seventh annual Save the Children Golf Day at Downes Crediton Golf Club on Friday, June 3.

Among the golfers on this glorious summer’s day were seniors, juniors, members and visitors, all playing for prized hampers containing local and high-quality produce.

Rangemoors, Ashgrove Kitchens, Veitch Penny and The Fountain Inn at Okehampton were all among the major sponsors. Other local firms, including Quicke’s Traditional, the Crediton Coffee Company and Ernest Jackson and Co provided goods for the ever-popular hampers.

All of the prizes were donated in some way, with firms and individuals sponsoring a hole or providing goods.

Among those who continue to be long-term supporters of this event are Edwin Tucker and Sons, Tesco Crediton, Judy Tucker and Sue Sparham.

The organisers, Judith Ezard (Save the Children’s local Community Co-ordinator) and her husband Paul, emphasise that this event could not be the success it is without the support of local firms, friends and golf club members.

This year had the biggest field ever with junior golfers taking part as well as some less agile seniors, who played the first nine hole competition at the end of the main field.

A team of dedicated supporters, all sporting red Save the Children polo shirts, helped to welcome the players and sell raffle tickets.

Eighteen other golf clubs, including Exeter Golf and Country Club, St Mellion and Bovey Castle all donated vouchers to auction and Brittany Ferries supplied a crossing for a car and four people.

Downes Crediton Golf Club is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year and is rightly proud of its beautiful course. On display, for the first time to many, was the new fountain in the lake by the 18th hole – a fitting tribute to a much missed, long term member and Crediton resident, Sheila Woolacott.

Among the winners on Friday was John Stevens of Yeoford with friend Paddy Flavin, now living in Surrey, both Past Captains of the Club.

Save the Children works in more than 120 countries around the world to save children’s lives, to fight for their rights and to help them fulfil their potential.
