MORE than 150 young female footballers from schools across Devon, including Crediton’s QE, have taken part in the yearly Catherine Fraser Memorial Tournament.

Organised by Exeter City Community Trust, the competition at Exwick Sports Hub brought together 22 teams from 13 different secondary schools, with matches held in a fast-paced and exciting six-a-side format.

The event was held in memory of Catherine Fraser, who worked at Exeter City Community Trust following her career as a journalist at The Times in London and the Express and Echo locally.

After she passed away from breast cancer in 2015, her mother, Glenda Riley, donated funds to stage the annual tournament.

Participating schools included Clyst Vale Community College, Cranbrook Education Campus, Exmouth Community College, Isca Academy, Newton Abbot College, Queen Elizabeth’s School, Shebbear College, St James School, St Luke’s Church of England School, Teign School, Teignmouth Community School, The Maynard School and West Exe.

The day featured a high standard of competition, with players showing great determination, skill, and sportsmanship throughout.

After an intense final, the cup was won by the team from St James School and Exmouth Community College were runners up.

The plate was won by Teignmouth Community School and Shebbear College were runners up.

Aaron Wakley, Women and Girls Football Development Officer at Exeter City Community Trust, said: “Before joining Exeter City Community Trust, Catherine broke new ground as one of the first female sports editors at a national newspaper.

“She was a true trailblazer who cared deeply about giving girls the chance to get involved in football.

“This tournament is a meaningful way to honour her memory.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Glenda for her support in helping us deliver this event and inspire these young women and nurture their interest in playing football.”
