SANDFORD Cricket Club’s Second XI’s run of good results came to an abrupt end last Saturday, July 12 at the hands of Exeter Seconds at the County Ground in Exeter.
Batting first, Exeter Seconds amassed a mammoth 342 for seven from their 45 overs, with opener Josh Paget cracking 95 (11 fours), but the real damage was done by overseas player Aashay Dube with a stratospheric knock of 115 from only 54 balls including 19 fours and two sixes. With Elliott Barnes also chipping in with 32, Exeter seconds reached the dizzy heights of 342 – a formidable total to say the least.
In fairness, Sandford were never in with a shout of winning the game, and the best they could achieve was from youngsters Joe Hopkins 40 (six fours) and Ben Handley 24 (three fours). While they put together a second wicket partnership of 59, progress was slow.
In the end, Sandford Seconds were dismissed for 165 after 41.4 overs to suffer their biggest defeat ever in the Devon League, by the massive total of 177 runs.
However, the seven points they did gain consolidates their third spot in C Division East, but any possible thoughts of an unlikely promotion can now be dismissed.
Next Saturday, the boys return to Creedy Park where they will entertain Ottery St Mary with a 1pm start.
