WHILST Sandford Cricket Club's 1sts continue to struggle in the Premier Division, the Seconds continue to “make hay” in the C Division East.
Last Saturday saw them entertain Uplyme and Lyme Regis at Creedy Park, and yet despite having a slightly below strength team, they managed a very comfortable win by 97 runs in a game that was rain restricted during the Uplyme innings.
Batting first, Sandford smacked their way to 298 for 8 in their allotted 45 overs, against, to be fair, a weakened Uplyme attack, who were allegedly missing three or four of their regular bowlers.
Leading the way for Sandford was Byron Knowles, having a run out in the seconds for a change in order to have a bat and get a few overs under his belt.
Byron nonchalantly cruised his way to 80 off only 63 balls (15 fours) in the middle order, with the innings having been given another good start by the in-form Jon James 42 (8 fours) and youngster Ben Handley 36 (5 fours), who together added 65 for the first wicket.
Zack Blewett making his 2nd XI debut scored 24 (4 fours), and when Archie Osborne 36 (4 fours) joined Byron they added 97 for the 6th wicket.
The eventual total of 298 was always going to be a difficult task for the visitors against a good, albeit depleted home attack, however, a couple of rain delays meant they had a reduced target of 265 in 40 overs, but in the end they still fell a long way short.
Jack James 2-43 (6), Liam Gardner, having his first run out of the season, 2-36 (5) and Ben Handley 2-28 (9) did the bulk of the damage for Sandford, and in the end another resounding victory was achieved. This result keeps them in 3rd place in their Division, and this Saturday sees them entertaining Bradninch 2nds at Creedy Park, 1pm start.
