CREDITON gained their highest ever away win in league rugby with this total 12 try destruction of Newquay in a game that, it has to be said, was as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.
Granted, the home side were under-strength but Crediton were dominant in every aspect of the game and clinical in their finishing.
Such was their overwhelming superiority, it took 75 minutes for Newquay to get into the Crediton '22' and exert any pressure!
It took 11 minutes of Kirton pressure to get the scoreboard moving when, from a home put-in at a scrum, the Crediton pack got the power on and stole possession.
A superb handling move saw winger Leigh Kinch score in the left corner. Eight minutes later and Newquay were caught offside in front of their posts and centre Mark Lee popped over the resulting penalty.
The Crediton forwards were controlling every scrum and most of the lineouts and on 25 minutes, a driving maul saw No8 Mark Nott touch down.
Three minutes later and he repeated the effort, this time from a pushover try which Lee converted.
The bonus point was secured in the 34th minute when lock Josh Lee darted through a gap to score and as the interval approached, full-back Jon Down was in the line to grab the fifth try, which Mark Lee converted.
The second half was barely two minutes old when Kinch benefited from an advantage allowed by the referee and raced home, Lee converting.
Crediton then began to score almost at will with Nott, Mark Lee, Wayne Reed and Dan Manns touching down in quick succession, Lee converting all four.
Then came the most audacious try of the game. Replacement full-back Rob Milton gathered a kick in the Crediton goal area but instead of clearing to touch, decided to run out of defence.
Down was in support and took play to the Newquay 10 metre line before shipping on to centre Andy MacLeod whose dynamic pace took him clear to score in the corner, Lee converting.
MacLeod also had the last word with another try from long distance, which Lee again converted to round off an impressive try fest.
Of course, it would be easy toget carried away with this result but we know there will be far tougher games to come. We caught Newquay on a bad day for them with a number of players out for various reasons.
However, it was encouraging to see some outstanding support play, quality passing and devastating finishing.
The defence was excellent and closed down any potential threat before the home side could gain momentum.
There will be much harder games to come but we are in a much better position than we were 12 months ago.
Crediton 'Quins 22 Paignton 0
The 'Quins gained their first Merit Table win of the season with a comfortable four try win. They could and should have won by more points but certainly it was good to get that first win under the belt.
Centre, Devon Hosegood, touched down for two tries with co-centre, Jake Clarke, and hooker John Gurzynski each scoring once. Fly-half Gareth Kinch landed a conversion.
TORRINGTON
SECONDS 17
Crediton Hornets 53
Both sides were struggling for numbers but managed a 13-a-side game after we loaned Torrington a couple of players. It proved an entertaining game and another Merit Table win for the Hornets.
It was the forwards who dominated the scoring, with Henry Nuthall scoring twice as did Jamie Cheffins and Jack Rogers, one of which was created for him by brother, Ben, who also scored.
Neil Sansom and Rob Leach also got a try apiece and Leach rounded off the scoring with four conversions.
Okehampton
Colts 14
Crediton Colts 13
The Colts felt somewhat aggrieved as the game hinged on a controversial decision regarding the conversion of the second Okehampton try.
The touch judges could not agree as to whether the ball had gone between the posts and the decision went Okehampton's way.
Nonetheless, this was a good performance from the Colts in the first leg of the first round of the Devon Colts Cup and they must have a real chance of progressing with the home leg to come in two weeks.
Forthcoming Fixtures: Saturday, October 12 First Fifteen v OPM (home); Second Fifteen v Devonport (home); Third Fifteen v South Molton (away); Colts v Devonport (home). PH
