ON Saturday, March 9, Colebrooke Short Mat Bowls Club held the finals of the club’s singles tournament, known as “The Captains Cup”.

Eighteen members entered the competition, which was won by Allan Gibb, with Jayne Grover as the runner-up.

The cup was presented to Allan by the club’s captain, David Pennington.

The club had success in a tournament at Callington, where they were runners-up in a competition which consisted of 25 clubs.

Two of the club’s founder members, Graham and Diane Shepherd have reached England’s national over 55’s pairs finals, playing as members of Winkleigh’s Short Mat Bowls Club.

They have also played in the singles, triples and mixed fours. In addition, they won the Devon Teams event, playing with three others from Winkleigh.

Colebrooke Short Mat Bowls Club meets on Friday afternoons and evenings and on Wednesday evenings. New members are always welcome and are entitled to three free sessions which includes lessons in how to play this challenging sport.
