ON a golden morning, people gathered to remember and think about the darkness of war at Crediton on Sunday morning (November 13).
Then, as on Friday morning, November 11 at 11am, more people than ever before stood in silent reflection at the Crediton town and Crediton Hamlets War Memorial on Union Road.
On Friday when the maroon went up traffic was stopped for the two minutes’ silence before wreaths were laid, led by Cllr Clive Eginton, Leader ,Mid Devon District Council.
Looking on were children and staff from Pippins Pre School and Nursery who had made their own poppy wreath, laid at the War Memorial by George Dumbleton and Seth Boulton, two of the older children.
The Haywards School wreath was laid by 10 year-olds Theo Whish and Maisie Rice.
Before the service in Crediton Parish Church on Sunday morning, a half-muffled peal was rung on the bells, the parade to the War Memorial following the service.
More people than ever were at the War Memorial to greet the parade, led by Crediton Town Band. Parade marshal was Sgt Chloe Knight.
More than 30 wreaths were laid some personal, some from town organisations such as the Scouts, Guides, Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, both Rotary Clubs, the Lions Club, Probus, the police, the fire service, the town schools and QE boarders, Town Band, the Rifles, Royal British Legion, Mel Stride MP with one for the Conservatives, Devonshire and Dorset Regimental Association, Women’s Institute, parish church choir and Freemasons.
Nigel Cooper, chairman, Crediton branch, Royal British Legion, reported that a four-hour collection at the Tesco store raised £768.85, an amazing amount in such a short time for which he thanked everyone who contributed.
