WORK is continuing apace at Chapel Downs to complete emergency road repairs along a stretch of the A377 between Queen Elizabeth Drive and Barnstaple Cross, where the roadway was unstable and beginning to subside.
The works began on January 15, are due to be completed, weather-permitting within a month, and require the complete closure of the road between Crediton and Barnstaple Cross.
Traffic has been using alternative routes, Higher Road and Jockey Hill being used by many vehicles, many larger vehicles using the official diversion via the A3072 to De Bathe Cross, North Tawton to Whiddon Down and joining the A30.
There have been some traffic issues on local roads, some motorists complaining it has taken up to 25 minutes from Spencecombe to Crediton.
Pinch points have been at the roundabout at the bottom of Jockey Hill, the Forches Cross junction at the top of Jockey Hill and the Alexandra Road junction with Higher Road.
Other narrow areas along Higher Road have also seen traffic come to a standstill.
Some Crediton traders in Crediton High Street and other parts of the town have noticed a decline in trade while through traffic is using alternative routes.
