THE Filo Project, a local and valued day care organisation, continues to work hard to support isolated people with early to moderate dementia in the community.

A Filo Project day is provided by a host, and takes place in the intimate setting of a host’s own home.

This warm and welcoming environment is key and no client is overwhelmed by a large group.

Apart from having a home-cooked lunch, what occurs in each group varies, and very much depends on who is in a group, and their capacities, preferences and personalities.

The focus of any day is to provide the opportunity for meaningful socialising.

Since the end of the first lockdown The Filo Project has received record numbers of referrals.

The organisation is an important lifeline for older people who are experiencing extreme loneliness, further exacerbated by coronavirus restrictions.

A happy by product of The Filo Project service is that carers, often stressed and overwhelmed with the day-to-day demands of their caring role, achieve regular and much-needed respite.

Demonstrating the difference the service makes, the grand-daughter of a client recently reported “at times you can feel a little lost and overwhelmed when living with Alzheimer’s but The Filo Project really has offered us the support we needed. My Nanna got so much from her time in their care.

“For a ‘home bird’ she loved her days out with her friends and built such a love for her Hosts. I can’t thank them enough for every smile they put on her face and every new experience they gave her.

“Not only this but the respite the Project gave to my Aunt who cared for my Nanna. The Filo Project made a tough time easier and helped my family more than I can say.”

Despite this having been a very difficult year for everyone, The Filo Project goes from strength-to-strength and is delighted to be able to maintain working with clients and their families to improve and sustain their well-being.

As well having client spaces available the Project is also always looking for good hosts to join its team.
