THERE’S a fantastic opportunity to hear a presentation from, and chat with, Professor Emeritus Marion Gibson at the Boniface Centre on Friday, September 11, at 7.30pm.

Marion is an author and historical consultant on witchcraft and magic, and formerly Professor of Renaissance and Magical Literatures at the University of Exeter.

She is a frequent guest on TV documentaries and at festivals; most recently you might have seen her on a Sky History series on the Essex Witches with Ryland and Professor Alice Roberts.

The presentation at the Boniface Centre is called ‘Welcome to Witchland: Recovering the Stories of Britain’s Civil War Witches’ and ties in with Marion’s new book ‘Witchland’ which is out now.

Marion is partway through a tour across the country discussing the book.

Witchland asks the question ‘if the witchfinders came to your town, who would you have believed and what would you have done?’

It discusses the turbulent time when Matthew Hopkins and others were leading mass witch-hunts across the country.

Using newly uncovered historical records, it gives back the voices to those accused of witchcraft, rather than shining a light on the people leading the panic.

The evening is organised by Crediton based charity The Folklore Library and Archive, based in Tanners Yard.

Both they and Marion are keen to make this evening as accessible to everyone as possible, and so tickets are just £5.
