SINCE May, the Floral Crediton Working Group and two of its local volunteers, Adrian and Stephanie, have been clearing the overgrown jungle at Blagdon Place putting in over 150 man hours of labour free of charge.
It is now cleared and ready for planting, subject to final approval from the town council and, of course, the £2,500 pounds worth of plants and materials needed to finish the job.
Oliver's Bakery, one of the most successful independently-owned businesses in Crediton, have pledged a donation to help purchase some of the palm trees and phormiums (an evergreen perennial flax) needed to fill in the main circular bed.
However, another £210 is needed to get this one area fully planted and visible to the people of Crediton.
Then, a major sponsor who wants to leave a legacy to the town and have the green named after them to donate £2,250. Any organisation, or individual, willing to help with this investment, please contact the Crediton Courier.
This artist's impression of the vision of Blagdon Green was drawn by Mike Summerfield, an artist living in Thorverton, who will paint a watercolour when the final approval is given.
A yew hedge will be planted along the fence stretching into rows of euonymus japonicus with cotinus (smoke bush) to provide lovely contrast and year round colour.
Also, two flower beds will be planted to give a year round colourful touch to the Green. The vision is to make this Green look as good as the St Lawrence Green.
All that is needed is town council approval, money to finish the project and any comments from the people of Crediton.
