AN exhibition of contemporary art will be staged at The Old Town Hall, Searle Street, Crediton, from Sunday, August 3 to Saturday, August 9, as part of the national commemoration of the outbreak of World War One. The exhibition Reflect Crediton will be presented by Steel Yard Arts and feature the works of Tim Backhouse, Paul McCullough and Nicci Wonnacott. The exhibition is primarily an installation based show. There will be film, sound, sculpture and drawings by Tim and other works by Paul and Nicci. The exhibition and works have been three years in the planning and Tim says much of the work is site specific, ie made for the space or location. He added: "This translates as work based upon social, historical and cultural aspects of Crediton and touches upon a wide variety of themes such as the Link Road, World War One and aesthetic considerations in and around Crediton." The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm each day. None of the work will be for sale. As a part of the "Reflect Crediton" exhibition copies of the newspaper The Crediton Chronicle from August 8, 1914 have been reproduced and will be on sale in the town and neighbouring villages. The newspaper will be available at many outlets, including Evans Newsagents and the offices of the Crediton Courier and Morissons, Mill Street, Crediton. It will also be available to purchase at The Old Town Hall. It offers a valuable insight immediately after the start of World War One with not only local news but also reports of action taken overseas in the first few days of the War and some detail of local preparations. Tim said that he intends to deliver some to local primary schools and libraries as an educational resource. The newspaper will be available at a very reasonable cost. Look out for the special issue of the Crediton Chronicle alongside your Crediton Courier.
