Will the recent budget help Crediton High Street?

THE story "Treasury Minister hails budget as good news for small businesses, our armed services and the NHS" appeared in the Courier on Friday, November 2, issue 1214.

The recent budget was welcomed by Central Devon MP Mel Stride who also serves as a Minister in the HM Treasury.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond referred to the budget as a boost "for small businesses and the NHS".

Mel Stride, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, worked closely with the Chancellor on the budget which was held on October 29, said: "Today’s budget delivered the Government's promise to provide £20.5 billion more funding for our NHS.

"It will also support local councils with an additional £650 million for social care, £84 million for children’s services, and £420 million for fixing potholes.

"A one-off £400 million for schools and the National Living Wage will increase to £8.21 per hour.

After years of austerity, will the cash injection from the budget be enough to support our local councils, our NHS, our struggling schools and nurseries, our roads and our High Street?

What you told us ...

I don’t think the budget will help much. The NHS needs help. There are too many chiefs and not enough indians. The money doesn’t always go where it’s supposed to.

To be honest a lot of people always criticise the government. I thought the budget was quite refreshing. It’s good to have a little positivity.

There’s one or two instances where it will help. For some it will. Brexit is the biggest thing at the moment - they need to sort that out.

I don’t think it will help. I hate seeing empty shops. I think the rates need to be lowered. I think it also has a lot to do with the parking. If people can’t park they will drive through.
