MEMBERS of the Crediton community are being asked if they can give just two hours volunteering time in March to help support a charity.

Marie Curie, the UK’s leading charity for people living with a terminal illness and their families, is urgently calling for volunteers in Crediton to give just two hours of their time to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pins, in return for donations.

Volunteers will be supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal – Marie Curie’s biggest fundraising campaign, held every March.

Lauren Peters, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Devon, said: “We are struggling to find enough volunteers in Crediton to help with our supermarket collections in March for the Great Daffodil Appeal. We would urge anyone from the Crediton community who can spare a couple of hours to get in touch.

“Collecting can be a lot of fun, you can do it on your own or with family and friends, and we will support you every step of the way.

“We only ask our volunteers to do two-hour shifts, and you can sign up for just the one or as many as you’d like! We have been generously given a whole week to collect at Morrisons but need some extra volunteers to make sure we don’t miss out on such a great opportunity.

“We are extremely grateful to all our current volunteers and to everyone who has come forward so far, but we do need more. We’d also welcome any local businesses who would like to get involved – we have businesses in other parts of Devon who are allowing their staff a couple of hours off each in March to take part.”

The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide much-needed expert care to people across Devon with terminal illnesses, as well as support for their loved ones.

Sue Shaw, a volunteer from Newton Abbot, said: “I collect every year for the Great Daffodil Appeal and it’s a great feeling to be supporting such an important cause. Marie Curie Nurses cared for my husband, Joe, during the last three weeks of his life enabling us to fulfil his dearest wish to die at home.

“Since then I have volunteered at collections, completed a 10 mile sponsored trek over Dartmoor, helped with fundraising events and joined the Newton Abbot fundraising group – all raising much needed funds to provide nursing care and support to others like Joe with terminal illnesses in Devon.

“I’ve met so many kind and interesting people along the way - many of whom have also directly benefited from the care provided by Marie Curie.”
