INCREASING the difference between charges for using car parks in Mid Devon, namely decreasing the charge in a Tiverton park and increasing those for Crediton car parks, has met with fierce opposition from Crediton councillors.

A paper presented to Mid Devon District Council's Managing the Environment Policy Development Group, proposes short and medium stay car parking tariffs increase by 20 and 30p respectively.

However, it suggests charges are "simplified" with a single ticket allowing up to five hours' parking for £1 at Tiverton's multi-storey car park which, officers hope, will increase usage.

The new charges were debated by the Mid Devon group at a meeting in Phoenix House, Tiverton, on Tuesday.

Crediton District Cllr Nick Way (Boniface), said he will be opposing any increase in charges in Crediton's Market Street car park, as well as any increases involving resident or business permit holders and charges overall.
