NOW there are many events to mark the end of World War Two, I wonder how many older people remember the Table Shelters?
These were large iron tables provided to homes for people to shelter in when there was an air raid.
These were at least the size of a very large dining table and took up a lot of room in our sitting room.
We ate off them but then took refuge in them when there was an air raid.
Mum put an old mattress in ours for comfort.
Dad (If he wasn’t on duty as an air raid warden) crouched at the end, together with our cat.
Mum and our two Wrens who were billeted with us, laid close together on the mattress.
It was very cosy but quite frightening as you could still hear the bombing.
I understand these table shelters saved many lives when their homes were bombed.
