CREDITON Talking News, read from the “Crediton Courier” by Crediton Lions and volunteers from the community, has been recorded and distributed weekly to more than 50 listeners for almost 10 years.

“Race across the World” television show winner Tricia Sail, from Exeter, who is partially sighted, recently went along to a recording of Crediton Talking News.

During the visit to the Crediton recording studio she made a special recording to go out to listeners and to promote her visit to the Boniface Centre in Crediton on Friday, September 8.

“An Evening with Tricia Sail” will begin at 7pm.

Tricia will tell those who go along about her fantastic trip with long-time friend Cathie and how they succeeded in getting to the finishing line first and winning the £20,000 prize.

Entry is by free ticket, available from the Crediton Courier office at 102 High Street, Crediton, by telephone reservation on 01363 773437 or 01363 82878 or on the door if space is available.

Tea and coffee will be available from 7pm and there will be a display of the Talking News equipment and materials, as well as the RNIB, which Tricia works for.

The Lions Club is sponsoring the event. Worldwide the Lions has a long history of concern for preventable blindness across the world and locally it was instrumental in the setting up and management of the Crediton Talking News.

Voluntary donations will be welcome in support of the Crediton Talking News and RNIB from the event on September 8.

Tricia said: “The Talking News service is so valuable for the partially sighted and blind. I know that there are very many people out there who could benefit but don’t know about this local service provided by the team here.”

Eris Parkes, Chairman, said: “Fifty listeners sounds a lot but we know statistically that there are many more people in our community that could benefit from the service that is entirely free.

“We would like to reach out to readers of the ‘Courier’ to help us increase our pool of listeners by letting them know of the service we provide.

“If you know of anyone who has any form of visual impairment to whom our service could be useful, please let them know and ask them or a carer or relative to contact me on 01363 82878 or call the ‘Crediton Courier’ or email: [email protected] , who will pass your details on to us.

“Each week the listener gets over an hour of recorded information and articles from the ‘Courier’ as well as other recorded material of interest.
