A TREE which has stood at St Lawrence Green for many, many years, this evening, Sunday, March 29, has come down on the green and across part of the pavement.

It is believed to have happened at about 6.30pm.

No-one has been injured.

The pavement is only passable with care due to branches and debris across half of it at the location.

The Green is owned by Mid Devon District Council which has been informed of the fallen tree.

St Lawrence Green was once used to hold fairs and public events.

There are reports of an annual fair taking place there in the 19th century.

Paths and gardens were created at the site to mark Victoria’s Jubilee in 1897.

The Green was enclosed by iron railings with smart gates but these were removed for the war effort.

In the centre stands the remains of a broken cross and a New Cross made to mark the Millennium.

The tree which has fallen has historic iron seated surrounding it but this appears not to have been damaged by the tree falling.

It appears that the trunk of the tree snapped or disintegrated at about 10 feet high.

The tree is visible by motorists passing along the part of the High Street on the A377 at the Green.
