ONLY one primary school in the whole of Devon achieved 100 per cent marks in the Department of Education (DfE) National School League Tables - and that was Tedburn St Mary.

Headteacher Andy Keay explained that this made the school the highest performing primary school in Devon.

Not only was it the one school in the county to achieve 100 per cent across the board in maths, reading and writing, it was also one of only 75 in the whole country to achieve the full 100 per cent, making it the fifth best performing school nationally.

Mr Keay said this was “a phenomenal achievement”. It meant that all his Key Stage Two pupils got top marks in each of the three subjects in the summer.

Every primary school in the country took part with those pupils now having moved on to senior schools.

Mr Keay added: “This is a reflection of how well our children work throughout the school and the hard work and dedication of all members of our staff.”

Tedburn St Mary Community Primary School is part of the Woodleigh Federation which includes Cheriton Bishop and Yeoford primaries.

Its chair of Governors, Alexis Saffin who lives in Tedburn, was delighted. “It is testament to the quality of teaching at Tedburn despite the current constraints and difficulties with the funding of small schools. Absolutely brilliant news.

“Congratulations to all the staff. Our pupils should be very proud of their achievement.”

The DfE says there are approximately 416 primary schools in Devon with more than three quarters achieving the level that is expected in English and Maths.
