A CREDITON woman has been named coach of disabled performers of the year.

Bank clerk, Sharon Hawkins, coaches disabled badminton players of varying abilities, notably for The Devon Racqueteers, based in Exeter.

Sharon received the Devon Sports Award at a ceremony held in Paignton from International cricketer Caroline Atkins.

The event, hosted by Active Devon, not only honours the achievements, but also recognises the dedication and commitment that often goes unnoticed of the many coaches, volunteers and officials involved in sport.

Sharon explained that the Devon Racqueteers is the largest wheelchair badminton club in Great Britain and has been running for 18 months.

She coaches weekly sessions, including members of an elite squad, some of whom will be going on to represent England in competitions. Locally she has also coached many badminton courses for able bodied people and others with varying abilities.

Her coaching has seen her recently take some of her students to Manchester to compete. She will also be assisting other students in preparing for other national tournaments.

Sharon said she was "delighted" to have received the award, adding that she found working with the Racqueteers "quite humbling".

She added: "It makes you appreciate how healthy you are."
