THERE was a right Royal feeling about the Farmers’ Market at Crediton on Saturday with Union Jack bunting, a huge Union Jack flying, “garden party” hats and a very big birthday cake fit for a Queen.

Yes, it was all about Queen Elizabeth II being 90. Most of the stallholders sported some sort of grand hat, there were balloons and a general party atmosphere, helped by the sunshine and the music of Stripey Howling Hancock.

Hils Fry of Hat-a-Cakes, had made the birthday cake, shoppers being offered a generous slice. It was cut by the Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch, using his foot.

The picture colouring competition for children was won by Cicely Bond, aged 11, and Holly Archer, aged eight. Both won a small-size crown made by Teresa Rodrigues of PaperFace that included enormous “precious stones”.

Among the usual stalls was Garlandhayes Farm with its range of venison from the deer reared on this family farm plus dog chews made from antler horn. Full sets of horn are available.

Chris Seagon from Laurel Farm Herbs and Edibles who moved to Whiddon Down in 2014 had a small selection from their hundreds of plants.
